What is a Singletrack Jungle?      Think of an Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus designed golf course…and instead of fairways and sand-traps imagine a system of natural surface trails 12” to 36” wide for mountain bikers hikers and equestrians.  Imagine a resort amenity where trees remain standing, wildlife is preserved and protected, all without pesticides, lawnmowers, irrigation issues or soil erosion.

The Trail Ahead
Written by Marla Streb

The Trail Ahead     The consumer demand for the mountain bike experience is growing rapidly on a world-wide basis. It is STJ’s belief that the ecological, economical and unique benefits of a mountain bike trail system can be the “biggest bang for the buck” as an amenity in a resort’s Master Plan. The demographics and the size of the cycling market are impressive. The growth of Eco/Adventure travel is the highest in its business category.  “Baby Boomers” are looking for a more active vacation and retirement lifestyle. The concept of Marla Streb’s Singletrack Jungle mountain bike trail system takes advantage of these emerging trends. STJ is confident that in the near future resorts and residential communities will enjoy mountain bike parks as amenities in the same way that they have golf courses.

The Numbers

The Numbers         A recent economic impact study was commissioned by the Mountain Bike Tourism Association (MBTA) from June 24-September 17, 2006 to analyze the economic impact of Mountain Bike Parks in the Resort Municipality of Whistler, BC, as a whole. The study concluded that the Whistler Mountain Bike Park contributed to over $16 million in economic impact.  The Whistler Resort now generates more revenue at lower operating costs from mountain bike operations than it does from its traditional ski operations.  Whistler was the first ski resort to adapt to mountain biking, but now almost every ski resort in North America and Europe operates a mountain bike park during the summer season. The only bad part of the mountain bike park success story is the short operating season.  Because of elevation and high latitude, the season for mountain bike parks is limited to a few months…late June to mid-October.  STJ believes that a mountain bike park in Latin America operating at lower elevations during the warm “winter” months can capture a large part of these revenues at lower costs, without competition, with less potential legal liability in a more ecological and sustainable fashion free from “beach front “ prices.
